My interest in science dates back to my early childhood. I have always excelled in physical sciences and have received numerous awards in mathematics in high school. At age 18, I attended Beijing Normal University, majoring in physics. Four years of extensive study on in physics and my current work in surface science inspire me to undertake a greater challenge in pursuing a doctorate degree in physics. My aspiration to be a research scientist also makes the graduate study an absolute necessity for me. As an undergraduate student, I specialized in physics, mathematics, and computer science. And in my junior year study I studied computational physics in Applied mathematics III, during which I developed a 2-dmensional model with the finite size effect as a course project. in addition to being elated by my computer simulated phase transition phenomena, I was also pleased with the computed values of the critical exponents which closely agree with theoretical values. During the two-year course on the fundamentals of experimental physics, I diligently studied the techniques of operating experimental equipment, such as the epitaxy systems, lithography, and computer controlled data acquisition interfaces. I enjoyed these hand-on experiences. My current duty, as a research assistant, is to set up diamond film growth kinetics experiments which is designed to verify whether the mechanism of H atoms destroying C-H bonds in diamond film growth is the bottleneck reaction to diamond film formation. The results will give valuable insights and better enhance the research efforts of another group here. In the meantime, I am learning about the scanning probe microscopy, charged particle optics, energy analyzers and instruments used in surface science through the seminars held in my group. In order to be knowledgeable in the breadth of physics, I have attended workshop and symposiums in different fields. In the symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics held in 1995 in Beijing, I worked as an interpreter and edited the article "Conceptual Beginnings of Various Symmetries in the Twentieth century Physics" from Prof. C. N. Frank yangs speech and translated it into Chinese. Not only did I keep an open mind to get experiences in academics, I also actively participated in extracurricular activities in my university years. In the senior year, I was a part-time teaching assistant grading exams and answering questions in the courses, A Journey to Subatomic World and From Quarks to Black Holes. I also had a part-time position as the bulletin board system administrator for the Physical Society of PRC. I am currently constructing their WWW home page to improve information exchange and science education in China. Accumulating these valuable experiences, I am preparing myself for a career in scientific research. Being exposed to surface science, I am interested in mesoscopic systems and nanostructure materials. I plan to concentrate on condensed matter physics. Having carefully read the content of the graduate studies and on-going research programs at University of Washington at Seattle, I believe that UW is the best place for me to be. I am confident in that my diverse research experiences together with a firm commitment to physics have merited me to be qualified to undertake graduate study at the University of Washington at Seattle.

Hello, everyone! Today, I am going to give you a speech about the advantages and the disadvantages of studying aboard.
First I want to talk about the advantages. The most important advantage of studying aboard is that we can have more opportunities to practice our foreign language, for the environment helps a lot. What’s more ,we can learn more about the culture of other countries. And we also make a lot of foreign friends. At the same time, we can learn how to lead a life all by ourselves and we also can build our communication skills. At last, we can get used to the globalization which is more and more influencing our lives.
However, every coin has to two sides. There are some disadvantages of studying aboard. Firstly, it takes a lot of money to study aboard and many families can’t afford it. Secondly, there is no one who can keep an eye on us, so that some of us may spend all time playing computer games. Thirdly, the culture aboard that has an impact on us is very different with the one of our country. Fourthly, we may have some problem to speak the mother language after years aboard. Fifthly, the language barrier may affect our efficiency of study. The last but not the least is that it’s hard to get treatment if we fall ill.
In a word, studying aboard has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. You should weigh the pros and cons carefully before you make the decision.
That’s all. Thanks for you attention!

My definition of successToday I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’
s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of
people’ hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure
every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a
successful life!
Wish you all good success!
To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening that I found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the 21st Century·Ericsson Cup Seventh National English Speaking Competition is a memory that I shall treasure and one that will surely stay.
More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued.
For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try. In the course of preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.
I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.
Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.
In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?
Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.
only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?
I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for my appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response. In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.
Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some were able to, but did not know where to stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. Or they were thinking of what they had prepared.
As I said in my speech, It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. We need to respond honestly.
A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking. Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. And this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.
And the following is the final version of my speech:At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.

i am pleased to write this letter for my former student miss nan li, who graduated from this college with an l.b. degree in june 1978.miss li was admitted to the department of law of this college in 1974 through highly petitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. even in such a selective group.

miss li made herself distinguished. as professor and dean of the college, i have access to her records of academic work and moral cond uct, in her fourth year study, i instructed her in anglo-american laws on trespass. so i have known her quite well. miss li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. in our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "a" , the highest level.

as far as i know, miss li wishes to continue her study in law for an advanceddegree. i am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study. i remend miss li without reservation and shall appreciate yourfavorable consideration of her application.

Dear Sir or madam:

it is a pleasure for me to provide an evaluation in support of the application of miss. liu keyan liu kaixuan as her former name, whom i have taught english for two years in english school. i acted as tutor of her and she became my friend. i have full understanding of her in many aspects and i can say responsibly that she is a rare excellent student our school has produced. miss. liu impressed first of all with her distinguished scholastic performance and her all-round development. she is almost a hero-like character on the campus. she is widely recognized, for her rank of always being one of the top students in various tests and exams, for her well-balanced development in all fields, for her broad horizon which is rarely found in other students. her mastery of english, which is far above school requirement and even higher than some of the college students, is most talked about and admired by both the school faculty and students. rather than score-oriented, she does equally well in after-school activities. the tutor of her piano recalled when miss. liu first joined the practice as a pupil in primary school, she looked very * all. by now, she has passed level-9 test for piano players, and has practiced playing piano constantly, even during the final year of her junior middle school when the coursework is so heavy. in other related aspects, miss. liu, being a member of her school long-distance running team, won several first prizes in the long- and medium-distance running events at the schools sports meet, and even got prizes in municipal-level running events. she told me in private that her favorite hobby is running, of which she thought can relax herself and refresh her minds. in a word, she is a remarkable person. not only her intelligence, but her maturity and willingness to help other people are really unusual. of course, she is by no means perfect. as a student of less than 16 years old, she has great potential to be tapped. therefore, she needs to be put into a more challenging environment to enrich and improve herself. an outstanding student needs an excellent academic environment and i believe that your fine-tuning programs will surely provide the best conditions for her to practice and experience. sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern:

I have had the distinct pleasure of having XXX as a student in my debate classes and on my debate team for three years at Eastern Little Hope High School.

XXX has been more than the ideal student. In order to achieve the highest grades and my deepest respect, she has demonstrated outstanding leadership and maintained a clear sense of purpose.

The academics at Eastern Little Hope are most challenging, and XXX fulfilled all the requirements with the added challenge of honors and advanced courses. XXX is an outstanding extemporaneous speaker and debater. She has won many awards on the speech and debate circuits, and qualified for national tournaments. Success in these interscholastic activities requires extensive research and persuasive skills. XXX also holds the degree of Special Distinction, as a member of the National Forensic League.

Due to its nature of metro, state, and national interscholastic petition, the successful high school forensics student serves by not only representing his or her school but also by representing his or her munity as well. One of the requirements in my advanced class is to prepare lectures and guidance for the beginners. With XXX’ s superior knowledge and involvement in the political sciences, she developed a strong sense of confidence with a charming attitude. Therefore, I could always depend on her to set the best example as an instructor. Because of her natural leadership abilities, XXX was selected as our Debate Captain. On account of her mature approach to her responsibilities, I often thought of XXX as a colleague.

Since her clas * ates, my fellow teachers, and I will always hold her in the highest esteem, I sincerely remend XXX Stone as the ideal candidate for matriculation at Eastern Little Hope State.

Respectfully submitted,

XXX, Ph.D.

Study overseas can be the adventure of a lifetime, and the majority of these experiences are healthy and safe.

Ideally, those who get " gilt" experiences abroad can return home, helping purify the domestic academic atmosphere and enhance research levels.

In order to reduce culture shock it would be beneficial for the students abroad to obtain specific training both in the foreign language and in cross cultural competence.

I do not place much hope in studying abroad.

But today she called me that she would go abroad to study soon.

But study abroad is not suitable for everyone because of the high cost, fees.

Your parents also may need to tell the program personnel how they feel aboutyour studying abroad. You'll also have to go through interviews with schools orsponsoring organizations.

Nowadays, many people like to study abroad. Studying abroad is often considered as a great opportunity which will lead to bright future in one's ride of passage. Not only can we learn different cultures and knowledge from foreign countries, studying abroad can also enrich our lives.
One coin has two sides. Likewise, different people have different minds. Conservative and negative concerns about studying abroad have been gradually emerging from our society. People start to wonder what goes wrong with studying abroad. There are a couple of issues worth of our discussions.
Disadvantages of studying abroad may affect one's life culturally and economically. We Chinese will experience cultural shocks if we study abroad and live in another country. Some peers may not be able to adapt to a new environment of their studying and living, which may be very different from that of theirs. Life is beautiful, and it is hard. If one does not feel comfortable with the new culture of another country, he will not be happy about studying in that country.
In addition, studying abroad can cost students a great deal of living expenses. Some Chinese students are so academically successful that they receive scholarships in their studies. However, most peers who study abroad do not receive scholarships. Furthermore, they have to deal with many unexpected hardships by living away from their parents and homeland. For example, medical insurance, daily foods, clothes, rents and transportation can generate a large amount of living expenses. Often time, they need to heavily depend on their parents' overseas monthly payments.
