出國(guó)是件很辛苦的事情,前后忙活了得半年,如果加上之前準(zhǔn)備英語(yǔ)考試的時(shí)間,那就更長(zhǎng)了。這份申請(qǐng)總結(jié),是對(duì)自己申請(qǐng)過(guò)程的一個(gè)回顧,一來(lái)希望借此機(jī)會(huì)讓自己能夠好好反思申請(qǐng)中存在的問(wèn)題,二來(lái)也希望給其他學(xué)弟學(xué)妹提供參考和借鑒。申請(qǐng)過(guò)程中,得到了很多師長(zhǎng)、同學(xué)的幫助,也從論壇中獲得了很多信息,希望能借此回饋論壇。
1. 個(gè)人背景
本科:一所普通985高校;碩士:北京一所知名文科大學(xué)。專業(yè):農(nóng)業(yè)經(jīng)濟(jì)管理
可能大家都應(yīng)該知道我所在的兩所大學(xué)是哪個(gè)了。
英語(yǔ):IELTS(聽(tīng)力7.5,口語(yǔ)6.5,閱讀9.0,寫(xiě)作7.5,總分7.5)
GRE:159+166+4.0
GPA:本科:3.76/4.00,碩士3.84/4.00
有幾篇中文核心期刊論文,參加過(guò)老師的自科社科項(xiàng)目,也有參加寫(xiě)國(guó)際會(huì)議,沒(méi)有英文論文。推薦信都是國(guó)內(nèi)老師寫(xiě)的。
2. 申請(qǐng)學(xué)校及錄取情況
具體的項(xiàng)目名稱可能稍有出入,但是不會(huì)差太多。我申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校,范圍很寬,差距很大,全部是博士項(xiàng)目。下面是相關(guān)項(xiàng)目的一些信息,有些信息是來(lái)自于師兄師姐的介紹,也是一己之見(jiàn),可能有不準(zhǔn)確之處,只是作為參考,也是為拋磚引玉,希望大家都來(lái)發(fā)表意見(jiàn)。
UIUC(Geography)offer
系里分人文地理、GIS、自然地理三個(gè)方向,人文地理老師不少,質(zhì)性和定量都有做的,涉及領(lǐng)域也很廣泛。UIUC地理系在NRC排名上列全美第四,是個(gè)不錯(cuò)的地理系,人文地理方面,環(huán)境政策做得很好。
U of Toronto (Forestry) offer
林業(yè)系里面只有兩個(gè)老師在做social science的,一個(gè)是林業(yè)經(jīng)濟(jì),一個(gè)是林業(yè)治理(偏社會(huì)學(xué)和政治學(xué)),招生也很少,所以申請(qǐng)之前,需要問(wèn)老師招不招生。
U of Michigan (Natural Resource Management) rejection
北美四大資源環(huán)境學(xué)院之一。這個(gè)系非常雜,做什么的都有,但是招生競(jìng)爭(zhēng)非常激烈。2014年,96人申請(qǐng),錄了6個(gè)人,錄取的人都是全獎(jiǎng)。博士項(xiàng)目里面,社科方向只招收2個(gè)人左右,競(jìng)爭(zhēng)激烈,建議申請(qǐng)之前套磁以下。和該院教授交流,教授說(shuō)如果自己有資金資助,會(huì)增加錄取概率,錄取對(duì)GRETOEFLGPA成績(jī)還是很看重的,當(dāng)然研究方向的契合是最重要的。
U of Florida (Agricultural Economics; Interdisciplinary Ecology) offer
農(nóng)經(jīng)項(xiàng)目,要求學(xué)過(guò)中級(jí)宏微觀計(jì)量課程,但實(shí)際上沒(méi)有太嚴(yán)格靠這個(gè)卡人。我碩士期間沒(méi)有學(xué)過(guò)中高級(jí)宏微觀,但是也錄取了。聽(tīng)一個(gè)師姐說(shuō),現(xiàn)在北美農(nóng)經(jīng)博士就業(yè)形勢(shì)嚴(yán)峻,F(xiàn)lorida的2014屆農(nóng)經(jīng)PhD就業(yè)狀況也不好。據(jù)說(shuō)他家的資格考試不是特別嚴(yán)格,通過(guò)率比較高。
U of California Davis (Agricultural and Resource Economics) rejection
老牌農(nóng)經(jīng)強(qiáng)校,但是似乎這幾年老人退休,新人上馬,處于變動(dòng)更新期。競(jìng)爭(zhēng)激烈,200多人申請(qǐng),最后發(fā)了30個(gè)offer,去了20多個(gè),最后資格考試可能還要刷掉一部分人。Davis的錄取也很奇怪,申請(qǐng)結(jié)束一個(gè)月之后,先發(fā)一批拒信,大約拒掉100多,之后開(kāi)始發(fā)offer,最后4月份再給其他人發(fā)拒信。
U of Georgia (Housing and Consumer Economics) AD
這個(gè)項(xiàng)目純屬試試,自己也沒(méi)太放心上,因?yàn)楸究谱鲞^(guò)類似課題,所以就申了,后來(lái)才知道這個(gè)項(xiàng)目還是不錯(cuò)的。佐治亞的這個(gè)項(xiàng)目之前在商學(xué)院,后來(lái)獨(dú)立出來(lái),金融房產(chǎn)消費(fèi),就業(yè)前景好。知道的人不多,競(jìng)爭(zhēng)不激烈。3月初就出結(jié)果了,但主要問(wèn)題是,沒(méi)錢。今年這個(gè)項(xiàng)目碩士博士招了十幾個(gè)人,所有人都沒(méi)有獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金。學(xué)校在亞特蘭大,一年學(xué)費(fèi)生活費(fèi)20—30萬(wàn),如果資金不是問(wèn)題,可以好好考慮下。
U of Connecticut (Agricultural and Resource Economics) AD 轉(zhuǎn)碩士項(xiàng)目
康涅狄格農(nóng)經(jīng)系小而精,資源環(huán)境做的不錯(cuò),但是也面臨人員新舊交替。我申請(qǐng)的是博士,但是被轉(zhuǎn)成了碩士,可能是因?yàn)檎n程不夠的緣故(我沒(méi)有學(xué)過(guò)中級(jí)宏微觀經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué))。據(jù)說(shuō)這個(gè)項(xiàng)目finding也不是特別足。
U of Texas A&M (Agricultural Economics) rejection
我被這個(gè)項(xiàng)目拒絕之后,發(fā)信詢問(wèn)原因。負(fù)責(zé)人告訴我,因?yàn)槲疫x了“必須要獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金”,如果沒(méi)錢我也能來(lái),它就給我發(fā)錄取。所以,看來(lái)“是否必須要獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金”這個(gè)選項(xiàng),對(duì)于錄取還是有影響的,需要謹(jǐn)慎選擇。但是看論壇上有人是收到了帶獎(jiǎng)錄取的,不太清楚里面的獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金發(fā)放機(jī)制。德州學(xué)校單獨(dú)使用一個(gè)錄取系統(tǒng),操作非常復(fù)雜,如果申請(qǐng)德州的學(xué)校,務(wù)必提早申請(qǐng),摸清系統(tǒng)的使用規(guī)則。
U of Kentucky (Agricultural Economics) offer
錄取截止日期很晚,結(jié)果發(fā)放的非常晚,它家農(nóng)經(jīng)也還行,可以作為保底的學(xué)校。
U of Guelph (Agricultural and Resource Economics) rejection
學(xué)校排名一般,但據(jù)說(shuō)這個(gè)項(xiàng)目是加拿大最好的農(nóng)經(jīng)博士項(xiàng)目。據(jù)說(shuō)博士招生人數(shù)很小,所以競(jìng)爭(zhēng)非常激烈。他們家有碩士項(xiàng)目,而且是有獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金的,可以考慮申請(qǐng)碩士項(xiàng)目,作為博士申請(qǐng)?zhí)?。之前在論壇里看到過(guò)被他家碩士項(xiàng)目錄取的孩子。另外,Guelph和留基委公派項(xiàng)目有合作協(xié)議,如果走公派項(xiàng)目,會(huì)容易很多。
3. 選校,選擇項(xiàng)目
選校真的非常重要,我覺(jué)得應(yīng)該多花時(shí)間在選校上。關(guān)于選校,很多帖子都提供了很好的建議。毫無(wú)疑問(wèn),match是最重要的,如果能夠發(fā)現(xiàn)一個(gè)項(xiàng)目,它仿佛是為自己量身定做一般,那么錄取的可能性就很大了。另外,現(xiàn)在經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)類的申請(qǐng)真是太激烈了,對(duì)于自身?xiàng)l件不是特別好的同學(xué),還是不要把目標(biāo)放得太高。大家都蜂擁而至的項(xiàng)目,還是盡量避開(kāi)。其實(shí),國(guó)外有很多好的項(xiàng)目,但是大家選校的時(shí)候,往往都是跟大流,別人選什么,我也選什么,造成中國(guó)人扎堆。大家不妨把心儀學(xué)校所有的Program的列表都看下,如果有一個(gè)項(xiàng)目里面,有和自己研究方向類似的老師,那么就可以考慮申請(qǐng)。之后,可以在網(wǎng)上搜下這個(gè)項(xiàng)目的名字,如果發(fā)現(xiàn),其他人申請(qǐng)的比較少,那么這可能就蘊(yùn)含著機(jī)會(huì)。最后,其實(shí)經(jīng)濟(jì)管理類,可以跨申的項(xiàng)目非常多,比如我碩士是林經(jīng)的,不僅可以申農(nóng)經(jīng)項(xiàng)目,也可以申資源環(huán)境、生態(tài)學(xué)類項(xiàng)目,還可以申林學(xué)院里的項(xiàng)目,還可以申環(huán)境社會(huì)學(xué)等等。我覺(jué)得沒(méi)有必要把眼光限制在經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)院里面,雖然經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)院里對(duì)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)的訓(xùn)練,肯定要遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)好于其他學(xué)院,但是經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)院申請(qǐng)?zhí)ち遥绻渌麑W(xué)院有不錯(cuò)的導(dǎo)師,也可以考慮。
當(dāng)然,別人都不申的項(xiàng)目,或許是好東西大家不知道,或者是它本身就不是特別好,所以大家都不去申。所以,大家還是得多花時(shí)間,把項(xiàng)目里課程開(kāi)設(shè)情況、排名、師資力量、學(xué)校名聲等等都好好看下,這樣一來(lái),找到性價(jià)比很高的項(xiàng)目還是不難的。
4. 材料準(zhǔn)備
關(guān)于材料準(zhǔn)備,網(wǎng)上帖子也非常之多,我也就不細(xì)說(shuō)了。我只想提一點(diǎn),to say is easy, but to do is another. 一定要早點(diǎn)著手開(kāi)始寫(xiě)材料!!比如,PS,要早寫(xiě),一旦有靈感,就先記錄下來(lái)??梢砸獊?lái)學(xué)長(zhǎng)學(xué)姐的文書(shū)看看,先照葫蘆畫(huà)瓢,之后再一點(diǎn)一點(diǎn)改,改完之后就能發(fā)現(xiàn)早已是面目全非,脫胎換骨了。文書(shū)絕對(duì)不是一蹴而就的,一定要趁早開(kāi)始做!
關(guān)于文書(shū)修改的問(wèn)題,我個(gè)人覺(jué)得,文書(shū)修改還是有必要的。但是,只要改語(yǔ)言就好,結(jié)構(gòu)和內(nèi)容方面,文書(shū)機(jī)構(gòu)真的很難提出多么有用的建議。文書(shū),關(guān)鍵還是自己用心寫(xiě),不斷完善。另外,文書(shū)修改,不一定非找專業(yè)公司,自己的師兄師姐、一起申請(qǐng)的同學(xué)也能提供很多好的建議。
5. 一點(diǎn)感想
5.1 什么最重要
我之前一直覺(jué)得,什么在申請(qǐng)中最重要?現(xiàn)在想想看,是connection!我的建議是,不管是什么項(xiàng)目,申請(qǐng)之前,最好能夠找到項(xiàng)目里面的老師,問(wèn)問(wèn)某個(gè)方向招生否,選拔標(biāo)準(zhǔn)是什么。其實(shí),套磁的目的,也是為了實(shí)現(xiàn)這個(gè)目的。但是,坦率的說(shuō),一般的套磁,實(shí)在是精力花費(fèi)大,而且成功率低。相比之下,直接找關(guān)系,是個(gè)更加簡(jiǎn)單的做法。那么,如何發(fā)現(xiàn)connection呢?
第一是多參加學(xué)術(shù)會(huì)議,多和大牛打個(gè)照面,其實(shí)很管用的,大牛都是平易近人的。一旦看對(duì)上眼,就可能有意想不到的機(jī)會(huì)。第二是深入發(fā)掘周圍人的資源,比如學(xué)長(zhǎng)學(xué)姐出國(guó)都去哪里了?學(xué)院的導(dǎo)師曾經(jīng)去哪些學(xué)校當(dāng)過(guò)訪問(wèn)學(xué)者,或者拿過(guò)學(xué)位,或者和國(guó)外學(xué)校有學(xué)術(shù)合作?從我的經(jīng)驗(yàn)看,師長(zhǎng)對(duì)于愿意出國(guó)讀博的學(xué)生,都是非常關(guān)照的,也愿意給與幫助。他們完全可以幫忙問(wèn)下,國(guó)外院系的某個(gè)導(dǎo)師,招不招生,或者給你引薦一下。
其次,就是個(gè)人水平。自身能力的重要性,無(wú)需多言,但其實(shí)很多時(shí)候大家并沒(méi)有對(duì)此給予足夠重視。我覺(jué)得GRE、TOEFL/IELTS、GPA肯定是越高越好,文章越多越好,課程越高級(jí)分?jǐn)?shù)越高越好。條件不好,即便導(dǎo)師努力推薦,對(duì)方也可能不愿意要。
最后,就是課程。我在課程方面,吃了很多虧。我的教訓(xùn)是,真的要學(xué)習(xí)好數(shù)學(xué)和經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)課程。我所在的學(xué)院,連碩士都是不開(kāi)高級(jí)宏微觀計(jì)量的,更別提數(shù)學(xué)課了,這在申請(qǐng)時(shí)簡(jiǎn)直是致命的。如果學(xué)院不開(kāi),自己就要去選修,一定要在課程上,符合對(duì)方學(xué)院的要求。否則很容易讓對(duì)方覺(jué)得,你沒(méi)有完善的知識(shí)體系和研究能力。我申請(qǐng)康涅狄格,之所以被從博士轉(zhuǎn)為碩士,主要就是課程不足的原因。
6. 關(guān)于CSC(國(guó)家公派)
我還想提提公派的事情,現(xiàn)在大家對(duì)于公派也重視起來(lái),我在這方面,還是有一些心得,在此和大家分享下。
走CSC,需要有兩步。首先按照正常程序申請(qǐng)國(guó)外學(xué)校(也就是說(shuō),你必須符合國(guó)外學(xué)校的申請(qǐng)要求,參加托福雅思GRE考試等),在拿到國(guó)外學(xué)校錄取(一般都是免學(xué)費(fèi)或者提供學(xué)費(fèi)的半獎(jiǎng)offer)之后,再向留學(xué)基金委CSC申請(qǐng)公派獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金(即生活費(fèi))。這里要明確,公派的話國(guó)家是只提供生活費(fèi)的,亦即,對(duì)方學(xué)校必須同意提供學(xué)費(fèi),或者免除學(xué)費(fèi)。留學(xué)基金委只對(duì)極少數(shù)量的申請(qǐng)者提供學(xué)費(fèi)。事實(shí)上,公派每年也給極少人提供學(xué)費(fèi),但這需要單獨(dú)進(jìn)行面試,而且錄取率比不申請(qǐng)學(xué)費(fèi)的低很多,所以還是不要輕易嘗試得好。具體規(guī)定,請(qǐng)登錄留學(xué)基金委網(wǎng)站,詳細(xì)了解,里面的規(guī)定還是非常復(fù)雜的。公派,原則上是要求回國(guó)服務(wù)的,一心想移民的,可能不是很合適走公派。
按這幾年的情況看,拿著美國(guó)學(xué)校的錄取,走公派的比例是最高的,這主要是因?yàn)槊绹?guó)學(xué)校多,好學(xué)校更多。但這里頭有個(gè)問(wèn)題,大家容易忽視:北美學(xué)校的學(xué)費(fèi)普遍較高,而生活費(fèi)遠(yuǎn)低于學(xué)費(fèi);歐洲則是生活費(fèi)比較高,學(xué)費(fèi)沒(méi)有那么高;而公派,國(guó)家提供的是生活費(fèi)。因此,從學(xué)校的角度上看,歐洲學(xué)校要比美國(guó)學(xué)校更喜歡要公派來(lái)的中國(guó)學(xué)生。公派對(duì)美國(guó)學(xué)校,吸引力有限,因?yàn)樘嫠〔涣颂噱X。所以,不要以為拿著美國(guó)學(xué)校offer申請(qǐng)公派的人多,就覺(jué)得要走公派,申美國(guó)比歐洲容易。
如果確實(shí)想走公派,一種辦法是,申請(qǐng)時(shí)不告訴對(duì)方自己想走公派,如果對(duì)方錄取了,并且給了免除學(xué)費(fèi)或者是覆蓋學(xué)費(fèi)的獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金,但是沒(méi)有提供學(xué)費(fèi),那么自己再申請(qǐng)公派。第二種辦法是,申請(qǐng)的時(shí)就直接告訴對(duì)方自己想走公派,國(guó)家可以提供生活費(fèi),這樣對(duì)方學(xué)校可能覺(jué)得它只需要提供學(xué)費(fèi)就行,因而更愿意錄取你(只是可能)。
如果你申請(qǐng)的是歐洲學(xué)校,那么只需要讓對(duì)方導(dǎo)師按照留學(xué)基金委出錄取信就可以了。據(jù)我所知,歐洲很多學(xué)校是有個(gè)大老板,大老板負(fù)責(zé)下面所有博士,博士實(shí)際不是一般學(xué)生,而是employer,錄取信也是由大老板出,這樣只要搞定大老板就好了。但是,美國(guó)學(xué)校比較麻煩,美國(guó)學(xué)校的博士錄取是非常標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化的,需要committee和研究生院的審批,而不是只由導(dǎo)師決定的,對(duì)于文科、社科類專業(yè)更是如此。這就造成一個(gè)問(wèn)題,美國(guó)學(xué)校,可能不會(huì)完全依照留學(xué)基金委的要求出具錄取信,而且,它們很難做出妥協(xié)。比如:學(xué)校出具的錄取信,可能是這么寫(xiě)的:
“如果你能拿到公派錄取,我們可能/通常會(huì)會(huì)免除學(xué)費(fèi)?!?br>但是,這實(shí)際不符合留學(xué)基金委的要求,“可能/通常會(huì)”類似的字眼,很容易給人一種感覺(jué):即便學(xué)生拿到公派,學(xué)校也不一定負(fù)責(zé)學(xué)費(fèi)。
那么,學(xué)校為什么要出具這樣一個(gè)邀請(qǐng)函呢?我的理解是,這樣可以降低學(xué)校,萬(wàn)一因?yàn)槟撤N特殊原因無(wú)法提供學(xué)費(fèi),而可能肩負(fù)的法律責(zé)任。加了“可能/通常會(huì)”,即便未來(lái)因?yàn)橘Y金緊張,學(xué)校無(wú)法給你提供學(xué)費(fèi)了,那么它也不會(huì)承擔(dān)法律責(zé)任,因?yàn)樗呀?jīng)在錄取信中為自己留有了余地。但是,這實(shí)際上是將風(fēng)險(xiǎn)轉(zhuǎn)嫁給了留學(xué)基金委和學(xué)生。小木蟲(chóng)上,就曾看到過(guò)有學(xué)生控訴,美國(guó)學(xué)校只免了博士第一年的學(xué)費(fèi),第二年不負(fù)責(zé)學(xué)費(fèi)了,結(jié)果學(xué)生不知該怎么辦。
我的建議是,在申請(qǐng)美國(guó)學(xué)校的時(shí)候,沒(méi)有必要提前告訴人家,自己要走公派。在和老師套磁時(shí),可以先看看老師的態(tài)度,如果老師想要你,那么他可能會(huì)給你提供全獎(jiǎng),如果他想要你,但是funding不夠,那么他一般會(huì)直接告訴你原因,這時(shí)你再告訴他,你可以申請(qǐng)公派,學(xué)校無(wú)需負(fù)擔(dān)生活費(fèi)。
最后,我覺(jué)得,其實(shí)公派并不會(huì)給你申請(qǐng)北美名校帶來(lái)特別多的優(yōu)勢(shì)。因?yàn)槊W⒅氐氖菍W(xué)生質(zhì)量,它不會(huì)因?yàn)橛蠧SC提供生活費(fèi),自己可以少出點(diǎn)錢,而錄取一個(gè)不合適的學(xué)生,而且對(duì)于北美名校來(lái)說(shuō),學(xué)費(fèi)要遠(yuǎn)比生活費(fèi)高多了,CSC誘惑很小。但是對(duì)于申請(qǐng)歐洲學(xué)校來(lái)說(shuō),公派還是能夠讓對(duì)方更感興趣的。另外,一些學(xué)校是與CSC有合作項(xiàng)目的,比如UCLA, USC, UT, UBC等名校。走合作項(xiàng)目,可能會(huì)增加申請(qǐng)成功的幾率,但要被錄取,還是要符合對(duì)方學(xué)校要求,而這些要求也是不低的。
最最后,如果大家想了解公派,請(qǐng)去小木蟲(chóng)論壇,里面的公派留學(xué)版塊是公派申請(qǐng)者的大本營(yíng)。另外,現(xiàn)在公派申請(qǐng)難度是一年比一年大,申請(qǐng)公派的過(guò)程也是相當(dāng)繁瑣,中間需要注意的事情也很多,大家都要有心理準(zhǔn)備。畢竟,國(guó)家的錢也不是那么好拿的。
7. 關(guān)于IELTS和TOEFL
關(guān)于雅思和托福,大家都知道,現(xiàn)在二者適用性差異已經(jīng)很小了,即大多數(shù)北美學(xué)校都認(rèn)可雅思,而多數(shù)歐洲澳洲學(xué)校也認(rèn)可托福,但是,我還是誠(chéng)懇的告訴大家,如果真的決定以北美為主,還是堅(jiān)定的考TOEFL吧,不要考雅思。
北美對(duì)于IETLS的歧視是非常明顯的,比如Connell的農(nóng)經(jīng)根本就不認(rèn)可雅思,多高都沒(méi)用。還有一些學(xué)校,比如俄亥俄州立,很多項(xiàng)目托福只要100,而雅思要求8,這幾乎是告訴你,死了心去考托福吧。還有加拿大的多倫多大學(xué),雅思總分7,單科6.5 但是托福才93,很明顯,考托福也是有優(yōu)勢(shì)的。因此,如果去北美,堅(jiān)定考托福吧。
最后,申請(qǐng)還是很不容易的,大家都要有心理準(zhǔn)備,希望大家能堅(jiān)持下去。我其實(shí)條件不是很好,中間也遇到過(guò)很多打擊,有時(shí)候都準(zhǔn)備二戰(zhàn)。和我一起申請(qǐng)的同學(xué),有的非常優(yōu)秀,但是因?yàn)楦鞣N原因,結(jié)果也不是很好。但是,人生是個(gè)馬拉松,中間的波折,在日后回頭看去,都不算什么。希望大家都有信心,都能堅(jiān)持。和我一起申請(qǐng)的那個(gè)同學(xué),準(zhǔn)備今年繼續(xù)申請(qǐng),也祝她能成功,祝大家都一路順利!

I am writing this letter of recommendation for Mr.Caleb,my former student. I have known Mr. Caleb for more than 6 years since his freshman year at "University of Minnesota". At that time,he took the course-- "Mathematical Analysis," which I taught mainly for junior students majoring in Mathematics.
To my surprise,I found he was among the few students in his class who could keep up with the pace of my lectures. Moreover,he often posed thought-provoking questions during the course. It is easy to explain,because he belonged to the talented student class,which were required to endure harder test papers and stricter grading than most other college students did at least at "University of Minnesota". He even served as Prof. Linda s Research Assistant for one year. No one could deny his commitment to his job.
As a matter of fact,Prof. Linda s electronic lab happened to be neighboring my office and I could always see him working in the lab,either repairing the instruments or helping Prof. Linda collect lab reports. Maybe one more example will demonstrate his commitment more clearly. once he suggested compiling a FORTRAN program to solve a complicated circuit problem in his class. In order to do that,he had to do a lot of computer work. However,because there were few computers available in our computer lab,he had to wake up at 5 a.m. in winter (please note: "Twin city" is a downtown near the north border of China,so it is pretty cold in winter and the heating system is not working very well.) to ensure the 1st position of the long waiting line for his classmates and himself! At last he and his classmates finished the program successfully with his great efforts.
As to his personality,I would like to say Mr. Caleb is a warm-hearted,honest and upright student. He was always ready to help others. During my lectures,many students got confused at some points and I could always see Mr. Caleb help them explain during breaks. In the meanwhile,I must admit that Mr. Caleb was a bit impatient sometimes.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the significant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. When I first met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to me. While his exam scores were good?they were not as high as I would now expect of him. What I didn't know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time?including Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While most students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficult Wang was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.
Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and computer science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.
Serving as his thesis advisor?I had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. In this way?he found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.
Mr. Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual. Teaching and advising him has been a delightful pleasure. I know that if given the chance to study abroad in America he will arm himself to become a great programmer he dreams of being.
