和jock是現今美國學生常用的兩個俗語。nerd的意思和漢語中的“書呆子”類似。這類人往往是聰明勤奮,但卻過于保守嚴肅,在校園里頗讓人瞧不起。jock則恰恰相反。他們魁梧帥氣,很受女孩子們的歡迎,尤其擅長American football和basketball等各種體育運動。當然,校園中也不乏漂亮的girl jocks。
ead這個詞在1952年的美國總統(tǒng)大選中曾被首次使用。當時的競選雙方分別是二戰(zhàn)盟軍總司令艾森豪威爾和書生氣十足的伊利諾伊州州長史蒂文森。史蒂文森精心準備的競選演講文字華麗晦澀,只有和他一樣的知識分子才會感興趣。因此對手取笑他說:Sure,all the eggheads love Stevenson. But how many eggheads do you think there are。egghead的意思,就是指書生氣很足的知識分子。
和city slicker這兩個詞的意思也是在各種語言中一定都能找到對應的詞,它們分別是城里人和鄉(xiāng)下人對對方的貶稱。hick的意思是“鄉(xiāng)巴佬,土包子,”而 slick字面意思是“圓滑的,油滑的”,因而city slicker也就是鄉(xiāng)下人眼中的“城里老油子,打扮光鮮,老于世故卻不可信的城里滑頭”。
ey(火雞),shrimp(蝦)和crab(螃蟹)這三種動物在美國人眼中會是什么人呢?turkey是美國人在 Thanksgiving Day和Christmas Day家家都要吃的食物。但是,活的火雞樣子難看,行動又笨拙,所以turkey就用來形容那種愚蠢無用的人。而那種雇用了這些turkey,又不能開除他們的政府或商業(yè)機構就被稱作turkey farm。shrimp常被用于指代那些個子矮小的人或無足輕重的小人物。請看下面的句子:You may call Napoleon a little shrimp. But for a shrimp,he certainly made the rest of Europe tremble。而crab因為長相丑陋兇惡,常被用來指那些性格暴躁、脾氣很壞的人。
boomer,yuppie(雅皮士),dink(丁克),sandwich generation這四個詞反映了美國經濟和社會變化。二戰(zhàn)結束后的二十年內,美國人口激增,那個時期出生的人在美國被稱作baby boomers,因為boom有激增、暴漲之意。yuppie(雅皮士)(young urban professionals)是指生活在大城市、受過高等教育、生活富裕的成功職業(yè)人士。dinks (double income,no kids)是指那些有很好的工作和收入,但是不要孩子的夫婦。sandwich generation則恰恰相反,他們是既要贍養(yǎng)老人,又要撫養(yǎng)下一代,像三明治一樣被夾在中間的經濟負擔較重的一群人。
h potato和mall rat是兩個和美國人生活習慣有關的俗語。couch potato指一有時間就坐在沙發(fā)上看電視的人,一聲不吭,一動不動,就像一個圓滾滾的土豆。而mall rat當然不會是購物中心的真老鼠,而是指沒事兒老喜歡到mall(大商場)里去逛的人。
seat driver,wheeler-dealer,free-wheeler,fifth wheel是四個和汽車有關的常用習語。backseat driver坐在汽車后排,卻不停地對前面開車的人指手畫腳,因此是指那些自己不在崗位上,但是卻喜歡給在位的人提供人家不需要的意見的人。wheeler-dealer精明能干,是那種善于運用權利和財勢在政治或商業(yè)活動中為所欲為,獨斷獨行的人。free-wheeler喜歡自由,不受約束,是指那些不愿意遵守自己工作單位的規(guī)章制度,想怎么做就怎么做的人。而fifth wheel的意思則很好猜出。一輛汽車只有四只輪子,那么,fifth wheel當然是多余的、不受歡迎的人了。
n thumb和all thumbs也是兩個很有意思的俗語。green thumb指善于養(yǎng)花種草的人,這些人總是能把花園收拾得綠色怡人,養(yǎng)出來的花草光亮健康,羨煞那些費了很多勁兒,種出來的花草蔬菜卻總是半死不活的人。所以,green thumb就是那些很會養(yǎng)花種草的人。如果說一個人是all thumbs會是什么樣呢?想想看,拇指雖好,可要是十個指頭都長成短短粗粗的拇指,干起活來肯定很難受。因此all thumbs便是形容一個人笨手笨腳。
y-pincher和cheapskate都是指花錢很小心、吝嗇的人。penny是一美分,pinch意為“捏”,顧名思義,penny-pincher就是那些連一分錢都要在手里捏得緊緊的、舍不得花出去的人。cheapskate則是萬事以省錢為本,越省越好,請客最多帶你去MacDonald。這種人往往不受歡迎,尤其令他們的女朋友反感。從這個意義上說,cheapskate比penny-pincher更貶損。
ng chicken和lame duck是指春天孵出的小雞和瘸腿的鴨子嗎?當然不是,讀一讀下面這兩句話,猜猜它們的意思吧。(1)The woman said,over forty,so I'm not a spring chicken any more。(2)The governor of our state ended up as a lame duck when he lost the election. He still has six weeks left in office but there's nothing to do except to pack up his papers。實際上,spring chicken意為“年輕人,缺乏經驗的人”,lame duck是指“競選連任失敗、即將卸任的官員”,也用來指“不中用的人”。任何美國官員——從市長、州長、參議員到總統(tǒng)——都有可能因無能而被稱為lame duck。

問題1:聽聽力的時候是否可以不聽原文直接用技巧做題?

不聽原文,而直接做對題的情況只出現在童話里.但是換句話說,做題也不需要100%聽懂原文內容, 但托福聽力的對話和講座都有相對固定的結構,這些結構都遵循一般的講課或者解答問題的邏輯,從這個角度來說,也反映了國外口頭作文的習慣。

因此,如果我們把握了它們的結構,找到它們傳遞信息的規(guī)律,就可以很容易地找到出題點,同時對提高我們的寫作水平也是有好處的。通過對以往20年的真題分析,我們發(fā)現,新托福和舊托福聽力相比,雖然篇幅加長,但是給我們的反應時間是充裕的,錄音的信息點并不是集中出現的,一般是有節(jié)奏性的,隔一段時間給出一個信息點。所以,我們聽的時候,最好也能分辨出部分信息點。

問題2:聽力中是否會出現非北美地區(qū)的口音?

托福聽力在前年做了兩次重要的改革:

第一是對考試報名的間隔時間做了新的調整,縮短了兩次報名之間的間隔時間;

第二就是官方加入了非北美地區(qū)的朗讀者的口音。

因此,在托福聽力考試過程中,你有可能聽到,英音,澳音。但無論如何,托福聽力不考奇怪的口音。大家最常聽到的是美音,根本不用為了考托福聽力而去練習聽黑人大哥的英語。所以托福聽力應該使用專門的聽力訓練材料,不過這樣的好材料不多。

問題3:我應該使用什么資料來備考呢?采用怎樣的先后順序?

第一次考試只做到15套就可以了,后面的可以留2套做模考。針對聽力基礎不好的同學,可以先做托福的官方指南和舊托福的第三部分,以及CBT考試的講座部分,用這些打基礎,補充背景詞匯并且練習精聽。

單詞是考托福的基礎,基礎不扎實就很難逾越80分,這是無數考生的血淚經驗。單詞+聽結構記筆記+做題,這樣的方法是經過長期證實的。曾經有個學藝術的學生,第一次考托福是30分。但學校還是來了錄取信,校方說如果她考到80分,就給她5萬美金的獎學金。于是她很努力地考試,但是第一次,只背了單詞,考了30分。第二次,單詞背了兩遍,考了60多分。第三次,70分,到了第四次她終于考到了80分。

由此可見,聽力訓練是一個循序漸進的過程,只有基本能力加上一定的技巧方法,才能最終獲得高分。

問題4:有些講座太專業(yè)了,我都沒有背景知識,怎么才能聽懂呢?

在官方指南上,ETS明確說了,聽力考試并不要求大家有專業(yè)的背景知識。凡是遇到比較難的專業(yè)術語,老師就會給出解釋,所以大家不需要熟練的掌握背景知識。曾經聽說過一個很痛苦的話題,講的是帕金森綜合征,聽了也不太明白,但是我把所有的專業(yè)術語的定義都記下了,還有一些原因啊,結果啊,例子啊,都把發(fā)音記下來了。

我發(fā)現其實考查的時候很少有題目在考專業(yè)知識,如果考的話,也是老師反復解釋的,因此即使不是十分理解,也可以根據筆記,也就是老師當時的解釋,把題目做對。聽說讀寫的詞匯是不一樣的,聽力詞匯更強調聽音的過程。不僅要聽得見,而且要聽得準、寫得準。

問題5:聽力中的這些單詞我都背過,并且寫下了我都認識,怎么一聽就聽不出來了呢?

這個問題有三個原因:

一個是很多人背單詞都不喜歡背發(fā)音,就是自己大概猜測發(fā)一個單詞的音。事實證明,因為猜測的發(fā)音都不太準確,所以做聽力的時就聽不出來。

第二個原因,就是聽力里的單詞不是單個給的,有時候有吞音、連續(xù),所以會聽不出來。

第三個原因就是,有些單詞的發(fā)音不只有一種,或者具備同樣發(fā)音的單詞不僅僅有一個即同音異義,導致童鞋們在臨考時分辨不清!

解決的方法,一是背單詞的時候要通過聽讀的方式背,另外就是多通過跟讀對話來熟悉吞音、連讀。針對第三種情況就要求大家在平時聽寫訓練的時候就注意積累一音多詞,或一詞多音的單詞,以備不時之需!

還有童鞋們可以放心的一點就是,一般出考點的時候,都是發(fā)音相對清楚的,仔細辨別還是能聽出來的。

問題6:聽力考不考習語和俚語?

在舊托福的考試中,有很多的習語和俚語。新托福的對話和講座中則很少考到習語和俚語,所以大家不必花費很多的時間背誦這些內容。但是一些生活中常用的詞組,例如:drop off, stop by , 還是會經常聽到。這些內容還是要多熟悉一下。我們在學校學習英語時,都會進行大量的精聽和泛聽訓練,其實這是提高英語水平最扎實的工作。因此,對于托福聽力,我也比較強調基本功。

問題7:什么是托福聽力的泛聽和精聽,應該如何讓安排?

大家要想真正提高聽力基礎,需要練習精聽。

精聽練習分為兩種情況:

一種是精細到每個單詞都聽明白、弄懂。鑒于托??荚嚨闹v座都很專業(yè),有很多詞匯考試過后基本不會再用,所以我不太建議全部精細地聽寫。

我建議聽一句話,把主要內容能聽寫下來,或者復述下來最好。練習聽一句話的關鍵詞,理解整句的意思。對話可以逐句復述,因為都是生活中還會遇到的句型和詞組。還可以邊聽邊摘抄。但是因為聽寫很耗費時間,所以不建議太久,一個小時或者更短就足夠了,主要是要集中精神地聽。聽得多了,你就會發(fā)現,自己的發(fā)音也會逐漸變好。

問題8:有時候聽長的講座到后面精力跟不上怎么辦?

這種情況多出現在那些聽得少的學生身上,因為不熟悉,所以聽一會兒就容易疲憊。我們要培養(yǎng)自己的聽力習慣,平時就要每天多練習幾個講座。建議2到3個講座。每個講座都按照考試的要求來做,不可以停頓,不可以中途休息。每個講座聽完錄音、做完題目之后,再按照考試的時間播放錄音。這樣的練習多了就會慢慢提高聽的耐性,一般堅持2到3個星期下來就可以看到效果。

問題9:我在聽聽力的時候總是容易走神,怎么才能克服這個問題呢?

要是漫無目的地聽,大家都會走神,畢竟托福聽力也不是什么很有意思的東西,所以大家都要帶著問題去聽,帶著我們的預測信息去聽,這樣就能在很大程度上解決走神的問題。還有一種造成走神的原因就是大家習慣做毫無目的的泛聽,這樣會養(yǎng)成習慣性走神。所以大家要想考好托福聽力,首先要放棄這種泛聽的練習。平時練習聽力的時候就要集中精神地聽,練習抓信息點,時間長了就糾正過來了。

問題10:在聽的過程中要不要記筆記?

要記!要記!要記!

一是防止走神,二是預測出題點。因為如果不記筆記,有些細節(jié)就是當時聽到了,后來做題的時候可能也會忘記。但是我們不能盲目記,或者因為記筆記而干擾聽內容。大家要在練習的過程中,找到一個最佳平衡點。

問題11:我應該怎樣記筆記,哪些才是重點?

要按橫縱向聽力法記筆記,要發(fā)明自己的縮寫,自己的符號。另外大家要特別注意,橫縱向聽力法提到的記筆記要點,不一定都要寫下來。最重要的是寫考點所在的信息。抓住要點,在聽的過程中,注意聽就行了。筆記應該精煉而有效。

問題12:我記完筆記答題的時候有時間看嗎?

記筆記的過程是加深印象,只有少數的細節(jié)需要大家回去看筆記。另外也提醒大家,要多用標記,例如表示原因就寫R,這樣回去看筆記的時候才容易找到要點。記筆記的時候,一定要用縮寫,這一點很重要。

這些題主要是考查學生的閱讀理解、聽力理解和口語表達等綜合能力。最難的部分莫過于第3、4題,其要求是考生先在45秒內閱讀一段文字然后短文隱去,再聽一段與閱讀文字在內容上相關的聽力材料,時間大約為1分半鐘,最后要求考生根據先前所讀、所聽的內容回答相關問題,考生有30秒鐘的準備時間,然后進行60秒鐘的回答。通常一道是情景題,另一道是學術題。

評分檔次

2. 養(yǎng)成大聲讀英文的習慣,再嘗試著用腹式一口氣練習,這樣使你說出的英文更有底氣,更流暢。

3.每天早晨起床后,張大嘴,啊五分鐘,這樣有利于練好你的腹式一口氣。

4. 養(yǎng)成每天去運用的習慣,學過了很多東西,要經常拿出來曬太陽,要學會賣弄英文,你可以找Partner,也可以對著天空,大樹,小鳥對話,只要把這些語言運用自如了,變成你自己的了,什么都好!

5. 學會正確使用復讀機,先精聽,然后去讀,去聽自己的發(fā)音,找出與磁帶錄音的不同,直到自己的發(fā)音與磁帶的發(fā)音一樣了,再接著聽下一個。

6. 要有專一的精神,不要兩天學美式的,兩天學英式的,我們說這兩種發(fā)音都挺好的,所以,你喜歡哪種就模仿哪種,而且要保證你所模仿的材料從始到終幾乎是那一種發(fā)音。

7. 要敢說英文,不要怕犯錯。記住:在你用正確的 方法 練習之后,你犯的錯越多,憑著語感糾正的錯誤也越多,進步也就越大!學習外語的好習慣。

8. 老師,我每天都模仿了一個小時,可以已經十天了,還是讀不好。

做得很好,習慣是養(yǎng)成的,只要你用正確的方法去模仿,每天堅持去模仿就是一種好習慣,當然,并不是說我模仿一個小時,發(fā)音就能跟磁帶一模一樣,而是每模仿一次就會進步一點點,這只是時間的問題,也許第十一天,第十二天,就讀好了呢?最重要的是你堅持每天去模仿,養(yǎng)成一天不模仿就渾身難受的好習慣!

9. 每天找人去運用,學一句用一句的好習慣,語言的學習是邊模仿邊練習,邊運用。不能說等我學好了會說了才去說,而是能說幾句就說幾句,幾天說一句比十年說不出幾句要強得多 。

10. 每天堅持復習的好習慣,學過的東西不能丟了,要每天都復習,把練習過的 句子 拿出來做口譯。
