“熱鍋上的螞蟻”用來形容人們心里煩躁、焦急，坐立不安的樣子，指的是restless，unable to remain still（焦躁不安，靜不下來）。英文中也有一個古老的俗語用來形容這種緊張不安：好像熱磚上的貓（like a cat on hot bricks）。Hot bricks指的是“熱磚”，想想看，貓爬在熱磚上當然不能靜下來了。
